Breeders Cup Friday 2021 at Del Mar

Friday – Future Stars Day

Race 1

4-3-1-11

My top pick for this race is #4 Triple Tap. He won impressively in his debut and has been very sharp in the mornings. #3 Silver Moon Road has won 3 straight and joins a trainer who wins 27% with first time claimers. #1 Fratelli drops in class here and returns to the dirt where he has had much more success. I expect him to rebound well. #11 Sumo looked good winning last time out showing improvement over his first effort. Trainer is also winning 33% with horses returning 46-90 days away.

Race 2

8-3-4-9

#8 Ready to Purrform has won both of his career races including a similar stakes last time out. Look for him to impress again today. #3 Degree of Risk finished 3rd last time out in a Grade 1 and drops in class here today. The two horses that he finished are both running the Grade 1 Juvenile Turf later in the day. #4 Optimising ran fourth in his American debut and is poised to improve off that effort. #9 Boise will go off at a decent price but has the talent to come closing into the finish late and light up the board after looking very strong closing in his maiden victory.

Race 3

3-9-2-6

#3 Big Novel has shown improvement in all three of her starts including breaking her maiden last time and a third in stakes company in the previous. Look for her to take another step forward today. #9 Vivacious Vanessa closed home very strongly in her maiden debut and victory. That closing kick will serve her well here. #2 Bold Choice is two for two in hitting the board including a second to Big Novel last time out. #6 Big Switch won a solid debut here at Del Mar in her only start and will try to build on that effort.

Race 4

8-1-2-6

#8 Superstition drops down in class today and returns to a much more successful distance for her having 3 wins and 2 places in 5 careers starts at 5 furlongs. #1 Hear My Prayer won last time out and last looked good in the morning, putting down a bullet work in her last. #2 A G Indy was nailed on the wire by a nose but her early running style should benefit the return the shorter distance. #6 Thunder Love did not draw into her Breeders Cup race and I have a hunch that they brought her with purpose. Look for her to hit the board at a price.

Race 5

12-1-11-5

#12 Finneus returns to sprinting here after hitting the board in his previous two attempts in with graded company. His drop in class here positions him well to run by everyone late and score the victory. #1 Joker Boy comes out of the same route as Finneus and returns to sprinting where he had much more success. Add Blinkers today and trainer does very well with horses going sprint-route-sprint winning 35% and in the money 65%. #11 Slow Down Andy did not slow in his debut drawing away late to score in his debut. Building on that effort will have him squarely in the mix here. #5 Fast Draw Munnings won a good race in his maiden effort. Breeding suggests that he will love the 7F distance.

Race 6 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint

6-8-9-10

#6 Twilight Gleaming is a very fast horse and comes back from Europe having won her last and second in her previous start. Look for her to be right up front today. #8 Averly Jane comes in 4 for 4 including a very good stakes win at Keeneland. Look for her to try to go right to the front and lead them around. #9 One Timer is another burner who is 3 for 3. #10 Time to Party finished second last time out One Timer but was closing in. If the pace falls apart, Time to Party will be one of the ones closing in late.

Race 7 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies

6-5-2-4

#6 Echo Zulu is the horse to beat and has been flawless in her three career starts. #5 Juju’s Map also won an impressive Grade 1 last time out at Keeneland and will look to spring the upset here. #2 Hidden Connection is two for two including a Graded stakes win at Churchill. #4 Tarabi hit the gate on the way out in her last start before recovering to finish second behind Echo Zulu.

Race 8 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf

14-2-5-4

#14 California Angel is two for two on the grass including a very impressive stakes win at Churchill in her last start. Look for her to come flying in late again today. #2 Cairo Memories is two for two lifetime and pulled away strongly in both her victories. #5 Bubble Rock is a very quick filly who will be stretching out but did win her last two starts. #4 Turnerloose had won two straight before being out finished last time by California Angel. Look for her to be in the mix again today.

Race 9 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile

12-10-9-5

#12 Corniche looks to be the colt to beat having gone gate to wire in both of his career starts, most recently a Grade 1 at Santa Anita. #10 Commandperformance has finished second in both of his races thus far but has not had the cleanest of trips. He finished second to Jack Christopher who scratched but would have been a top 2 pick here otherwise. #9 Pinehurst is two for two lifetime and both of those wins were here at Del Mar. #5 Double Thunder is a closer that will come at price. He has improved in three straight including going from 9th to second in his last effort at Keeneland.

Race 10 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf

3-2-4-14

#3 Dakota Gold is two for two lifetime including at very good stakes win last time out at today’s distance. He came home willingly from off the pace and will look to duplicate that today. #2 Albahr is a winner of four straight including a Grade 1 at Woodbine after crossing over from Europe. He is a very talented gelding. #4 Tiz the Bomb comes in a winner of three in a row and will look to come from off the pace and close out the race strong. #14 Dubawi Legend comes in from Europe having hit the board in all three career starts which include two graded stakes.
